Ten years of a new life

July 1, 2007 | stories

Today my friend, Darrin, came up to me in the hallway.

“Ten years, Suz,” he said.

Wow. Ten years. It didn’t seem possible.

You see, ten years ago my friend tried to take his life.

Someone found him.

The doctors say that he’s fortunate that he didn’t die. For a long time after that, Darrin felt anything but lucky.

A lot has happened in 10 years. He was healed of an addiction to pornography. He started to understand what it meant to be a child of God. He also discovered who he was, separate from his past, separate from what people thought, or spoke about him.

Today Darrin is a licensed pastor. He is married to a beautiful woman. He is a father to two children, and he loves and delights in his family. He is also very whole, very healed in every way.

He remembers the person he once was — addicted, abused, depressed, confused — and that’s why he allowed me to share his story in one of my books, but it’s also why he shares it one-on-one with others who find themselves trapped in that same place.

The 10th anniversary of this day might be a day that some might not want to remember, but for Darrin, he sees it as a day to celebrate life and second chances.

Happy rebirth day, my friend.
