The art of saying no, and yes

August 28, 2007 | T. Suzanne Eller

I have refined saying “no” to a fine art. I know when to say “this is not for me” or “this is not the time” or maybe even “this is an amazing opportunity, but the ultimate Boss says nope”. (more…)

“We cannot take the approach that we just need to teach people the classic spiritual disciplines, assuming that a person already has a developed center. We must use spiritual disciplines to help people form the center.” - Reggie McNeal in The Present Future (Jossey-Bass, 2003)

Spa for The Soul

August 20, 2007 | reviews

spaforsoul.jpg

“We were not created to keep going and going and going, like the Energizer Bunny. It’s no wonder a familiar catchword in this new century is “24/7″ because that clearly describes our workweek, shopping opportunities, and how often we feel we must be available to others. Yet none of us can be “on” for twenty-four hours a day, seven days a week. It’s simply not physically, emotionally, or spiritually possible. And when we try, we collapse.” Lucinda Secrest McDowell, Spa for the Soul

I sat on my dock today and read the first chapter of this great little book by author Lucinda Secrest McDowell. (more…)

World Vision Experience

T. Suzanne Eller

aids-experience.jpg

My good friend, author and speaker Keri Wyatt Kent, shares her experience of a virtual World Vision tour. This is an excerpt from her post:

I had the most amazing experience yesterday. It touched my heart, and I hope, changed me. I hope it made me into a more empathetic person, one who cares more deeply. Have you ever wondered what would it be like to a child living in poverty? (more…)

My Utmost for His Highest

T. Suzanne Eller

Excerpt of daily devotion

My Utmost For His Highest

“He calls by name.” John 10:3

Does He Know Me?

When I have sadly misunderstood Him? (John 10:17.) It is possible to know all about doctrine and yet not know Jesus. The soul is in danger when knowledge of doctrine outsteps intimate touch with Jesus.

Why was Mary weeping?

Doctrine was no more to Mary than the grass under her feet. Any Pharisee could have made a fool of Mary doctrinally, but one thing they could not ridicule out of her was the fact that Jesus had cast seven demons out of her; yet His blessings were nothing in comparison to Himself. Mary “saw Jesus standing and knew not that it was Jesus . . ;” immediately she heard the voice, she knew she had a past history with the One who spoke. “Master!

Read the rest of this devotion by Oswald Chambers at Studylight.org.

The gatekeeper opens the gate to him and the sheep recognize his voice. He calls his own sheep by name and leads them out. John 10:3 (The Message)

A really great article

August 15, 2007 | articles

slbaptismofrepentfea.gif

I found a really great article today called Baptism of Repentance on one of my favorite sites, True-U. This article is thought-provoking. Here’s a quote from the article written by Lindy Keffer:

As Gentile believers, we’re made clean by Jesus’ blood and not bound by laws about uncleanness. Unfortunately, the fact that we don’t have to obey those laws makes us lazy, and we don’t take the time to understand them, either.

Me again. This isn’t a condemning article, but an insightful look at the beauty of a confessing lifestyle. Laying it on the table, with God, to ourselves, and to each other. Being honest, and understanding how powerful this thing called “cleansing” is in light of the cross. (more…)

food for thought

August 13, 2007 | quotes

homer.jpg

There was a moment in my day when I felt homeless. I couldn’t go home, because I knew that would be too tempting. I couldn’t be with my friends because that would be too tempting. I had just eaten, so I couldn’t just sit in a restaurant all day. I was walking down the street literally with nowhere to go, and I just didn’t know what I was going to do.” —a student taking part in a 24-hour media fast for the “Understanding Mass Media” class at American University, in which participants were not allowed to watch television, listen to the radio or use their cell phones [washingtonpost.com, 8/5/07]

When I think of the many blessings. . .

August 4, 2007 | T. Suzanne Eller

I think of this: my beautiful daughter, Leslie. This is the intro from The Mom I Want to Be: Rising Above Your Past to Give Your Kids a Great Future:

She was fragile and beautiful with blue eyes and wispy blond hair. I touched her tiny face and was amazed at how awesome she was, but I was also afraid. Would I repeat the mistakes of my past? Would this baby one day carry the same burdens that I did as a child? And the most pressing question of all:

How could I be a good mother when I didn’t know how?

Suzie again: That’s a question that God answered over and over. He showed me how to move away from the past, to embrace the gift of Leslie, Ryan, and Melissa, and how to be the mom I hoped to be. This is that beautiful baby girl, now a woman, married on May 14, 2007. Isn’t she beautiful? Ahh, God, you are remarkable!
