What are you known for?

January 5, 2008 | Just thinking out loud,Knowing Christ,Ministry Life

Suzie and the Skit Guys - Natl. Youth Encouter, 2007

I’m meeting with two smart and God-filled people this month, and one of them asked this question: What are you known for?

This question isn’t posed in great English, but I hope you’ll put away your red pen long enough to hear the heart behind this question.

It’s about about ministry. What is daretobelieve or realteenfaith all about? Why do you do what you do?

This is something I’ve been thinking about for several days now.

Most Sunday mornings I go to a New Converts class. I’m not a new believer. I’ve been following Christ for over 30 years, but every week I get to see what God is doing in the lives of several women. It is a reminder of where I was when I first encountered Christ. It reminds me of why I travel, why I write, why I speak.

Knowing Jesus is of infinite value. It changes the course of your life. It frees people from addictions and bitterness and patterns of the past. And if you have never committed a crime or battled addiction or a painful past, knowing Him still alters your life as you come to know Christ and discover who you are as a child of God.

That’s what I thought about last Sunday when I had the opportunity to pray with two women, both who have lost their children and who are trying to find their way out of addiction.

My faith is real and personal, and if the books and speaking engagements and trappings fell away, I’d still be blessed because I have my relationship with God.

Perhaps that’s the answer. That’s what I hope to be known for–that I belive that faith changes the story of our lives when we encounter Christ.

It’s simple, but it’s the heart behind what I do, and more importantly, who I am with or without ministry.
