I need a resource
February 27, 2008 | T. Suzanne Eller
Hi Suzanne,
I heard your name on a radio show and thought you might be able to point me to a good resource.
I’m a mental health case manager and I work with several people who have a history of physical and/or sexual abuse. Can you suggest a book that I might pass along that might help them to get back their lives and their sense of self-worth? Thanks, FeliciaHi Felicia,
The interview you heard on Focus on the Family was over the book The Mom I Want to Be: Rising Above Your Past to Give Your Kids a Great Future.
It isn’t just about parenting. It’s a good resource for working through the issues from a painful past, how to gain a new perspective, what forgiveness is and what it isn’t, learning to trust again, and more. It also deals with the relationships and issues affected. It’s interactive and allows women to work through each chapter at their own pace. It also offers a small group guide in the back.
I receive lots of feedback from women who found the book very helpful. In fact, I hear from women almost daily.
Another author I respect and trust is Dr. Leslie Parrott. She has written a wonderful book called You Matter More Than You Think.
Nancy Alcorn offers books for adolescents. She is the director of Mercy House, a residential ministry for girls. Her books are about self-injury, eating disorders, sexual abuse and more.
Dr. Leslie Vernick wrote a book called The Emotionally Destructive Relationship: Seeing It, Stopping It, Surviving It. It’s practical and insightful.
I hope that these resources are a good start.
My husband is in the Masters psychology/counseling program. I know it’s a difficult and challenging field. Thanks for helping others. Blessings,
Suzie Eller
