simple things

May 19, 2008 | family

Melissa and Josh are staying with us for a few days. They are in transition, moving from one state to another to start Josh’s Masters degree and Melissa’s doctorate.

I know that many people find a crowded home awkward as adults navigate around the parent/child– adult/adult relationship. Sure, there’s a learning curve as my children get older and as our family grows to include sons- and a daughter-in-law, but I absolutely love my home full of family.

Funny, but I once thought the whole parenting aspect was complete at a certain time. The older my children get (early to mid-twenties), I realize that my parenting has changed, but it goes on. We have such influence –we can harm or encourage their relationships in their new marriages, or in the niche in the family. We can pray for them. We can make our home the safe place, or the place they move far away from. . .

Perhaps that’s another thought we can explore tomorrow.

But for tonight I choose to enjoy the company of my SIL and daughter, and enjoy the simple things–like delicious peanut butter chocolate cupcakes. Josh just pulled them warm out of the oven.

Ahh, a son-in-law that cooks. How wonderful is that?
