Have you ever done something and instantly knew it was a mistake?
Right before I traveled to She Speaks I thought it would be a great idea to add some highlights. My beautician had cut it but didn’t have time to do anything else. I went home, bummed, until I saw Melissa. She and Josh were visiting.
I ran to Wal Mart and picked up a highlighting kit that promised to be easy and fun. I couldn’t wait to tell Melissa that I had handpicked her to help me with this hair project. And according to the box, there was fun to be had as well.
“Don’t ask me to do this,” she said.
I was surprised at her lack of enthusiasm. Melissa loves hanging out with me (a total blessing), and usually she’s game for a challenge.
“I’m begging you,” she said. “You’ll regret this.”
We did have fun. We giggled when I put on the plastic cap and she tied it under my chin. She laughed out loud when I yelped when she pulled small strands of hair through the cap, along with a few flecks of scalp. I laughed until I cried when I saw my hair sticking out like antennas, a plastic cap so tight that it pulled my eyes sideways.
“It says thirty minutes,” she said. “You should go 15.”
“Aaa,” I said. “Let’s follow the directions.”
At 20 minutes, she came in where I was working. “Mom, you really should check those.”
I went into the bathroom and flipped on the light. I took off the 2nd plastic wrap that had been placed over the snug cap.
Hmmm. Why did those strands look white?
I washed my hair quickly. A world record, perhaps.
And there it was. My caramel highlights. Promised to be subtle and beautiful in my brown hair.

Blonde.
Really, really blond streaks.
Lemon yellow.
My daughter didn’t say I told you so though she had every right. After all, she BEGGED not to do it.
I have walked around a stripey blonde/brown/slightly caramel tonished for nearly three weeks now. But next week I have an appointment–and I’ll be myself again.

All I have to say about this is, at least you were smart enough not to do your whole head of hair. Mine turned brassy orange, about the color of a faded carrot top, and since I’d colored everything on my head, and melted most of it, I had to wait about two months to do anything other than shave my head bald. VERY SHORT hair is NOT attractive on a woman with a very imperfect head. I hated it. But, I managed to out grow it and I’m back to my own natural brunette self again.
July 2nd, 2008 at 12:07 pmOh Jan, how horrible! Suddenly my hair seems like a blessing. It’s still healthy, just stripey. : )
July 2nd, 2008 at 12:23 pmYeah, mine’s similar. Bright orange. I wasn’t going after bright orange. I felt like a pumpkin. Being a guy, I was lucky, though, and just went bald.
July 2nd, 2008 at 1:03 pmthis just goes to show….i am kind of always right
July 2nd, 2008 at 1:33 pmHey Anonymous aka Melissa. : ) In this case, you were right. Love you!
July 2nd, 2008 at 1:37 pmI don’t remember your hair looking bad at She Speaks at all!
July 2nd, 2008 at 9:26 pmThanks Beth. No melting. No damage. Just not what I expected. I just like being a brunette.
July 2nd, 2008 at 9:56 pmROFL!! Not at you, but with you - from experience!! My own natural dark brown hair (more gray than brown these days), is now suddenly a DARK brown, with a top layer of bright red!! The definition of mahogany is MODERATE reddish brown - but there ain’t nothing moderate about this ‘do!
The red attached itself to all the gray, and the brown just deepened what was already brown.
It’s finally beginning to fade, but now the gray’s showing again - so I just can’t win!! But it was fun being a redhead for awhile! Son #2 said I looked like a punk rocker.
Now you can explore the old theory that blondes have more fun! Let us know!
