Meme - 9 things that made me smile

July 12, 2008 | just for fun

When I first heard the word “meme”, I wasn’t sure what that meant. My children call my mom “meemaw”, but I don’t think that’s the same thing.

Someone asked me to “meme” 9 thing that made me smile today. It’s early. 7:55 a.m. So I’ll meme 9 things that made me smile yesterday.

9 Things That Made Me Smile

  1. Lysa Terkeurst sent me a sweet e-mail
  2. Richard called and asked me on a date
  3. Looking at the golden yellow and red tropical plant blooming in my garden (I finally found my green thumb and it only took 48 years!)
  4. Emily James, a friend of my daughters and our family, facebooked me and told me she was going to temp at a sleep study for Harvard for $2000 bucks (sign me up!)
  5. I talked to Darrin Ballard on Facebook chat - he is in Ireland and super happy
  6. Ryan came by for lunch
  7. The feel of the wind as I cycled around the block
  8. I found a tomato on one of the plants I set out a couple weeks ago
  9. Walking along the creek last night with Richard, eating pepperming ice cream on a waffle cone
  10. Singing to Lifehouse

Yesterday was intense. I am preparing for a leadership conference this next week and was buried in notes and research. But it’s cool that in the middle of that there are those moments that make you smile. Writing this makes me understand how much people factor into my joy.

Darrin lived with us for several months, coming to stay with us when life was really hard. His story is powerful (you can read it here), but his continued presence is our lives 10 years later is even more a gift.

Emily is a powerhouse. She and my daughter, Melissa, are best friends. Emily’s story is also unfolding. She went to church alone for a long time, but watched as first her brother and then others followed. Her brother is as on fire as she is, which is flaming. She’s so in love with Christ and yet so unique and relevant. She’s an amazing 20-something woman.

Lysa is the woman behind Proverbs 31 Ministries. She mentors women who want to speak and write. Her small Bible study is now an International organization. We meet across the nation as we bump into each other at conferences. She is quickly becoming a great friend.

And then there’s family. Richard, who sounded all sexy when he called asking for a date. I love that! Maybe walking downton by the scenic creek and eating a peppermint ice cream cone isn’t what some would call a perfect date, but it was perfect for me.

Ryan, my son, has moved. I love that he still likes to hang out with me. I love it when he drops in and just wants to talk.

And then there’s the one thing that makes me smile and it’s a surprise, to me and anyone who knows me well. I have found my green thumb. I don’t know where it’s been, but I’m known for my black thumb. I can kill a plant faster than anyone I know. I’ve blamed it on a lot of things (cats, tree roots, dogs, weather, the earth is warming. . .) but for the first time EVER I have beautiful plants growing.

What made you smile today?

Don’t feel bad about the plants. In my short 18 years, I’ve managed to kill many, many plants. I think, by now, my plants must feel like they’re on an episode of Survivor. Sad but true. :)

I hope the conference goes well! :)

  2. Flea says:

Number two sure made me smile. I love it when my Hunny calls and asks for a date. Just Friday.

How’s Richard liking his new job?

What made me smile yesterday? (It’s early Sunday morning now and I’m at work) Watching my Hunny brush the dogs then rake up all their hair. It doesn’t take much to make me smile.

  3. Suzie says:

Richard is loving his job. I asked him that question on Friday. It’s a tough working environment sometimes, but he is leading group and loves working with the men to overcome their addictions and life challenges. It seems like a great fit.

    Hello!
Thanks for your comment on my blog! Yes, “white & thick”, such a wonderful way to be described. :)

I am interested in your ministry. I will have to read more about you. And your books look great! Looks like God is really doing something within you!
    Blessings,
    Lelia
    I’ll be back…:)

OKAY! I just read “My Story”. Oh wow!! I loved the note from your Dad. God is just so sweet.

This is an awesome testimony of just how great He is!!
