Waiting Children

September 10, 2008 | community, mentoring

My daughter attended She Speaks with me in Charlotte, NC, this summer. She came into the room one night holding a picture up of a little girl from India.

“It’s my new Compassion child,” she said. “I’m a sponsor.” She held out the picture.

The little girl was different from the other pictures I had looked through that afternoon. I had wondered how people could choose among such beautiful children that pulled at your heart strings. This child looked angry. She stared at the camera, her eyes dark, her mouth a straight line.

“That’s why I chose her,” Melissa said.

My daughter chose a child that didn’t instantly draw you to her. She felt like this little girl might not have as strong a chance as the others. Who knows what this child has lived through at such a tender age?

For whatever reason — not enough sponsors, too many children too choose from — there are lots of children waiting to be adopted at Compassion International. Will you consider sponsoring a child for just $32.00 a month (a little over a dollar a day)? That will educate and feed a child, breaking them free from poverty and hunger, giving each sponsored child a second chance at life.

This is a list of children who have been waiting six months or more to be sponsored.

What is Compassion International? Compassion International ministers to over a million children in 25 of the world’s poorest countries through its Child Development Sponsorship Program - what you may know already as simply “child sponsorship.” With the support of sponsors, Compassion is reaching through the hands of local churches to release children from their spiritual, economic, social and physical poverty.

This ministry hinges upon the relationship between one sponsor and one child. That relationship goes both ways. Sponsors correspond with their sponsored children and support Compassion’s ministry to children for $32 (USD) every month. Sponsors also receive letters from their sponsored children, watching them grow toward physical and spiritual maturity. Sponsorship is a relationship that transforms both sponsors and children.

If you sponsor a child, will you let me know? I’d love to hear about her or him, and your new venture to encourage and love a child halfway across the world.
