Waiting Children

September 10, 2008 | community, mentoring

My daughter attended She Speaks with me in Charlotte, NC, this summer. She came into the room one night holding a picture up of a little girl from India.

“It’s my new Compassion child,” she said. “I’m a sponsor.” She held out the picture.

The little girl was different from the other pictures I had looked through that afternoon. I had wondered how people could choose among such beautiful children that pulled at your heart strings. This child looked angry. She stared at the camera, her eyes dark, her mouth a straight line.

“That’s why I chose her,” Melissa said. (more…)

Refreshing

September 8, 2008 | T. Suzanne Eller

Joy* and her boyfriend are new Christians. Joy is a former addict, a mom who lost her children, and who just got her baby girl back a few weeks ago. She’s in her twenties or early thirties, I’m not sure because it’s hard to tell. Life hasn’t been good, not for a long time.

Joy and I became friends one day in a small group. She didn’t have her little girl then. Others were raising her while Joy went through rehabilitation for her addiction. Her boyfriend was in the picture, but still on drugs. Joy became a Christian, drawn to our church because lots of other women from the rehab attended each week. (more…)

Isn’t this exciting?

September 5, 2008 | T. Suzanne Eller

I’m excited, watching the political race unfold. I won’t use this blog as a political endorsement because I don’t think that’s appropriate, and frankly I still am undecided.

But isn’t it awesome that we have the opportunity to watch these candidates shake up history? We are in the front seat as racial and gender lines are broken for the first time in our country’s history. My son called me yesterday early, wanting to know my opinion of Palin’s speech the night before. (more…)

What I’m up to. . .

September 4, 2008 | calendar, community, family, interviews

I’ve recovered nicely. The surgery couldn’t have gone better. I have five small stitches lining my upper lip, kind of like a small caterpillar.

Last night I got to hang out with 20 women in a new small group for moms. The win/win for me is that I knew about half of the women well, but made 10 new friends. I had an outline, handouts, you know, the usual, but the discussion took on its own life as women opened up, shared their doubts, encouragement, and honestly looked at hard parenting can be sometimes.

I love talking to the crowds, but wow I love sitting in the small settings among friends talking about things that women care about.

I couldn’t sleep last night because I was already thinking about next week’s topic: parenting styles - authoritive, permissive, and authoritarian. Fun stuff, right?

I am also having a blast at Momlogic as the host of the new community, Christian Momlogic. We are growing, and this week we talked about the challenges of parenting a young teen. Next week we are talking about “Is There Really Sex After Kids?” with author and parenting and marriage expert, Jill Savage.

Believe me, it was a fun and enlightening conversation and it should be a good week. I hope you’ll join us at Christian Momlogic!

Also, I’ll be a guest on WLGT LIVE Radio tonight. 8 p.m. EST.  Call in!

Impact for Life Book Drive!

September 3, 2008 | books, community, faith, mentoring, ministries

UPDATE!

Three checks have arrived: $25, $21, $35 (THANKS!)

Mel, Director of Impact for Life is excited that the news of this amazing ministry to women in prison is being shared. My hopes are for a miracle - the five loaves and fish kind — will you join me?

It’s rare that I step outside my comfort zone to ask anyone to help with a cause. It’s a hard thing for me to do.

But last February I traveled to Denver, CO to a conference. While I was there, I checked out a ministry in The Springs called Impact for Life. It’s a ministry to men and women in jail, but also to their families, especially their children.

Impact for Life believes that when an inmate is freed, that there must be a support system in place to help them, and their families, succeed. They start inside the prison, holding mini-conferences in prisons across the nation. They work with chaplains to create libraries and to provide books, audio materials, and support material to help them grow as a person, as a mom or dad, and in their faith. This is a complete volunteer nonprofit organization.

And it’s changing lives!  (more…)

b-day and more needles

September 1, 2008 | T. Suzanne Eller

UPDATE: Surgery went so well. They got all of the skin cancer on the first scrape, which was about the size of a pencil eraser. Five stitches later along the rim of my lip, and I was good as new! The dermatologist surgeon said it was some of his best work. Today (9/3) I feel good. Stitches come out in ten days! Thank you for the e-mails, prayers, and comments. You are the best!

Today is my birthday so I won’t post much, as I’m savoring the phone calls, the cards, the new purse Richard picked out (with the help of my daughter!). But I’m also enjoying the day today because tomorrow is surgery.

Remember the “needles in the face” post a few weeks back? One of the biopsies came back cancer. It’s slow growing, but it’s on my lip. Pray with me that the surgery will go well, that my smile (which I kind of like) won’t be disfigured, and that things go swimmingly. I’m in good hands, and I’m at peace.

But for today I will celebrate my birthday and enjoy family and friends and yellow chocolate with milk chocolate frosting (thank you, Ryan!).

Love my bloggy, bloggy friends.

Suz
