For all those who say “so you live in the dustbowl?”
October 24, 2008 | Nurturing Family
When I travel and people ask where I’m from and I say Oklahoma, someone is bound to say something like, “Oh, yeah, so you live in the dustbowl?”
Um, no. I live in beautiful green country, Oklahoma, with lots of lakes and fishing and horses and hills and bluffs and trees.
The film “Grapes of Wrath” is about the terrible period when Oklahoma was a dustbowl, but that was way before I was born.
But what about the panhandle? Isn’t it flat?
Only about 10 people live in the panhandle. : ) It doesn’t count as Oklahoma (sorry, panhandle people, but since there’s only 10 of you, I’m risking it.)
There are actually a lot of flat places in Oklahoma, but in NE Oklahoma it is gorgeous.
But back to hiking, I was a little worried for Sarah because she had on stylish flats, and part of the hike up Sparrowhawk is straight up. I convinced her to wear my tennis shoes. They were ugly (note to self: add a pair of tennis shoes to Christmas Wish List (on sale, please.) Sarah was a good sport and wore them, and I know they were needed as we hiked upwards.
When you are trudging up, you see the beauty of the trees and nature, but it’s only when you make it to the bluff that you get the full glory of Sparrow Hawk. It’s amazing. Two hundred feet straight down you see the Illinois River curved like an “S”, surrounded by trees turning red and yellow.
In the summer we like to raft, something I’ve blogged about before, but for the fall weather hiking is good. Tonight I plan to take a different hike through downtown Tahlequah. I don’t know if it is scenic, but it’s supposed to be historical. We’ll see.

How awesome it is you get to enjoy God’s beauty. We just camped at Greenleaf this weekend and it was so neat, not at all dusty lol.
