my dancing shoes

June 8, 2009 | Just thinking out loud

Somewhere along the way someone in my denomination decided that dancing was bad. Sad for me because I love to dance.

Not the inappropriate dance that probably makes my denomination even firmer in their admonition to “don’t do it!”. but just the fun of innocent dancing — with your mate, with your friend, with your sister-in-law. My nephew was married on Saturday. it was beautiful. Traditional beyond any wedding I’ve attended in a long time. The communion was sacred. The scripture spoken and prayers over their new beginning — beautiful.

The bride, my new niece, took my breath away. My nephew’s face made me cry — the joy he expressed was exactly what you hope to see in the eyes of a new groom.

And then we danced.

Brittney and Mitch led the way. Her father stepped in for a dance of his own and she held back tears as she fit in her daddy’s arms.

I danced with my sister-in-law, Jenn, and my sister, Mindy, with my husband, with my 72-year-old mom (fun!), my nephew, and even with the priest who was about 4 foot tall and sweet and had much more rhythm that I ever will.

The thing is, it was innocent and fun (and really great exercise!). I wish there were places where I live where a person could go for families to dance together and where I could pull out the dancing shoes one more time.

Until then, Richard and I will dance in our living room to old school tunes from Fleetwood Mac. We aren’t good at it. Dancing With the Stars probably won’t put us on their call list, but I’ll have a great time kicking around in my dancing shoes with the guy I love.

I understand that some dance moves are wrong and beyond ungodly. But I don’t understand how a church can decide it’s bad and say you can’t do it?

People danced in the bible, correct?

Miriam is the first one I can think of, off the top of my head, who danced and rejoiced after God parted the Red Sea. Right!?

How often did David dance for God, heck didn’t he even dance naked one time!?

I’m sorry I hope I don’t sound rude asking this but I just don’t understand the thinking behind not allowing dancing.

  2. Sarah Stanley says:

Suzie I love dancing and I do it every morning! haha Music is so awesome and if David can dance so can I :)
I hope one day my husband and I can be as cool as you and Richard!!
    I love you!!

  3. Flea says:

Two left feet, that’s what I have. Does your denomination say anything about singing to the radio at the top of your lungs in the car with the windows open?

I really enjoyed meeting you this evening! And I’m going to try adding you to my blogroll again. I’m using Google Chrome browser now and I think it might work this time. :)

  4. Suzanne Eller says:

They did dance in the Bible. : )

  5. Tammy Mullen says:

Mark and I Love to dance also! We have found a great place nearby to dance, have a wonderful time with friends, spend some much needed time together, exercise and best of all no late nights! :) We do not have the opportunity to take advantage of this as often as we would like, you know the realities of life and it’s sometimes challenging moments. I do enjoy the times we do and would like for you and Richard to join us sometime. It would make us all feel young again!! :) And for those of you reading this and gasping at the thought of Suzie and Rick subjecting themselves to such unchristian like behavior….I asure you all it is nothing but good clean fun (no drinking, smoking etc.). I was not joking when I said it would make you feel young again due to the fact that our age group (50′s plus) would be the youngest in the crowd! Get those dancing shoes on girl!! I prefer my dancing boots.:)
