cash for clunkers
August 1, 2009 | Just thinking out loud, Ministry Life
We have one good car and one not so good car. The good car is dependable, comfy, and safe. The not-so-good car gets us there and back, but has one headlight hanging down, a stripped-down interior, a sloped windshield with lots of blind spots and an odometer that has read 32,000 miles for 10 years.
It might have 100,000 miles. It might have 500,000. We don’t know.
I also think the not-so-good car might need a hip replacement because if you stay at a nice slow pace, the old girl is good, but if you push her she starts shimmying on one side.
When the Cash for Clunkers program was announced, we nearly danced with excitement. Was it possible that Old Faithful, shimmy and all, might qualify?
I know that the “Stang” qualifies as a clunker, per say. No questions there. But as I study the details, I find there is a second requirement: she must be roadworthy.
I think she qualifies! She starts every day. She’s faithful.
I’m at She Speaks this week. My days are long. Every hour packed. I’m surrounded by vibrant, interesting young and older women who desire to share a message of faith and hope. I’m hanging out with some teens in workshops that are tuned in to the call of God, eager to take the next step.
It’s interesting to step back and look at ministry through their eyes.
And I realize in many ways, I’m a clunker.
I have a few miles under my belt. I’m growing older. Though I’ve only been in full-time ministry for 8 years, it’s become such an intricate part of my life.
So, yeah. I’m a clunker.
But I also pray that I’m roadworthy. That I’m faithful as He is faithful. That I respond when he touches the key and says “go”.
The good news is there is no rebate program going on. I get to keep doing what I’m doing for as long as God wants me to do it.
My hope? That this is my call until I see the One I get to talk about (many, many years from now).

I don’t think you’re a clunker. I will agree with you about one thing, you have a lot more miles on you than your odometer says. Wait, that was supposed to be a compliment but I don’t think it came out sounding the way I wanted it to.
August 3rd, 2009 at 9:01 pmI didn’t mean A LOT more miles. I meant more miles. Nevermind. I’m quitting while I’m behind.
