Longing for God
August 24, 2009 | Knowing Christ
I’m really two really great books right now. One is “Longing for God”. It’s a look at the ancient texts of early Christians and how they perceived the faith. It’s a “chewy” book, that’s for sure, but it’s well worth the read.
One chapter is over community. Written in the mid 500′s, the church was seen as a vibrant place of discipleship, iron sharpening iron, and “sending out”.
I think that I have forgotten how powerful the church is, and is supposed to be. Many say that we can be Christians without attending a church, and I understand that theory. Yet when I look at this teaching from the 500′s and see the power and beauty of Christian community it makes me rethink my vision of my local church.
Does it mean that I criticize my church? Show the lack? Or does it mean that I review my part in it?
Hmm. The latter, for sure.
Because if I take a step back view it through this text, I find a vibrant community of teaching, training, sending, growing, maturing, and evangelism.
The author says that longing for God is ignited both in personal communion and vibrant community. I love that I’m looking at my church in a whole new way.
