the grand tour
October 20, 2009 | Knowing Christ, Nurturing Family
I just received the news that we’ve lost another family member. Remember Jack, the fun and faith-filled uncle that passed away just a few months ago? Well last night another uncle joined him.
It was unexpected, and he was far too young and too funny and full of life to leave, but he was also a man who knew Jesus.
In fact, Uncle Jack used to be his preacher.
I can almost see it now. Jack Hobbs was waiting to greet him, a wide smile on his face. He may or may not have had on a cool, funky hat, something he took to wearing when he lost his hair during treatment.
“Well, Ken, I know this isn’t what you expected, but I’m sure glad to see you. I see you still have your hair.”
“Weh-ll, if it isn’t Jack Hobbs,” he said. Ken would make a wisecrack, and then he’d squint his eyes and laugh at his own joke.
And then Jack would take his old friend, and brother-in-law on a grand tour. I can almost hear the conversation as the two laugh and catch up on news.
I know that right now his beautiful daughters and wife are hurting, and the loss is great and too soon after such a loss only a few short months ago in our family. But I also know that there are times that the prospect of Heaven, eternity, and seeing each other again is priceless.
And right now this is one of those times.
We miss you already, Ken.
You and Jack have a good time, okay?
