go Richard!

January 11, 2010 | Just thinking out loud, Knowing Christ, Nurturing Family

Yesterday our pastor called Richard and I to the stage. He was teaching a sermon about “getting going when you feel stuck”. He asked me a few questions about writing and changing careers several years ago, but then started talking to Richard.

Three+ years ago Richard worked at a mill. It wasn’t satisfying work, but it paid well and had great benefits. He worked there for 18 years. Though he didn’t love it, he was faithful to it and grateful for the paycheck. But he never focused on the mill or the hard, hot work or the hours, but the people.

As I listened to Richard share his heart with the church, I was inspired all over again by this guy I love a lot.

I learned from him. Lessons like, even when you are in a hard place God can shift your focus from feelings to people and God’s heartbeat for those people.

Or that it’s never too late to take calculated risks or to trust that God has a plan, maybe even a new plan that will take you far out of your comfort zone so that you can discover new heights and new territory in your life.

It’s not been easy starting over, going to school, changing cities, leaving a secure paycheck, but it’s been an adventure I’ve been honored to share with him.

When 2010 rolled over at midnight on January 1, I thought, “Wow, we’re finally here! It’s the year we thought seemed a million miles away.”

He graduates with his Masters in December of this year. His license will be finalized in December. He starts his LPC hours that same month.

Richard set a goal, prayed for direction to make sure he was on track with the Big Boss, and has faithfully worked to see it unfold.

I love you, babe. I’m so stinkin’ proud of you I can’t put it into words (or maybe I can), but you inspired this girl standing beside you on stage yesterday.

    Suzie,
Wow! Tell your hubby congrats for me. Congrats for you too for supporting and going along on the journey. I know Richard cherishes you for it (and many other things).

I needed to read what you said today about how he focused on the people when his job wasn’t his passion. I’m going to pray to live that out today as I go to work.

  4. Suzie says:

LPC is licensed professional counselor. His other license is licensed drug and alcohol counselor.

Thanks, Amy! I’ll share your comment with him.

Thanks, Nancy. I am shouting “woot woot!!” too.

  5. Janis says:

    Suzie,

I think that is wonderful to hear. I believe often times God allows us to come to crossroads and we choose to continue to keep going straight. Most times I feel as though that is because we are afraid of making a choice. We are afraid of letting go of the lord in our lives. However, I was at a place in the beginning of this year, I know, it was only 12 days ago but I reached a crossroad. I knew that I wanted to serve the one True and Living God but I was allowing the lord in my life to be priority. However, I learned you can’t have two Masters and today I can truly say I am serving the God with my whole heart. I realized that “Greater is He that is in me than he in the world” and with that as my foundation my choice was easy. One worship song I love to hear my church sing is “It’s so easy to Love You” and it has become much easier every day, since I went right at my crosswords. Be blessed and I enjoy reading the inspirations.

    Suzie,
I really never have ever respnded to a blog before today, but you struck a nerve in my soul.I love what you said about Saul and asking the question “who are you LORD? ” I was convicted emediatly and wanted to go deeper into the point the Lord made ,and I feel I’m on the right path ,but have so much to learn.I have been married for 32 years to a wonderful man of faith.I have been having trouble knowing if I’m suppose to be working at the same job for 20 years and if the Lord is calling us to do something diferent.I know I am guilty of not spending time in His word, but trusting that the message on the radio(all I listen to is christian) or the message the pastor delivered is enough,or the God tv shows are the right teaching for the day…never cracking open His word and saying to myself I got the right stuff.I might as well have been listening to anything.I know God speaks to me thru any way He chooses but I love that the Word is alive, and I truly am convicted.THanks for being really real and for your faithful study.I am not too busy for it either. I will make better choices from now on and will ck back Love you already and cant wait to meet you in Heaven!!

  7. Jeremy Hayes says:

I am in a spot similar to what you and Richard went through. I work a full time job and take classes at night all while trying to raise 3 boys. Courtney is a stay at mom (a full time job without monetary pay) and full time student. It’s hard living off of one income but we are making it. I am actually getting a degree in Psychology so I can be a counselor also and have the same reasons for doing that as Richard. Once Courtney finishes her teaching degree then basically we will go wherever she can get a job, but I don’t feel like where I am at now is where I want to be in 10 years so hearing both of you Sunday was good for Courtney and I to hear. So thanks to both of you.
