More than a meal

February 8, 2010 | Nurturing Family

One year ago my niece Kim was thrown 60 feet in the air, her helmet split in two, and landed broken (see my blog post that week). She was flown to a trauma hospital in a nearby state. My sister and I rushed to Kansas, hoping that she was okay. Her back was broken. Her knee was blown open. She had several breaks from the sternum down. She had a massive concussion, asking where she was and what had happened every 30 to 60 seconds.

It was scary. She’s been in recovery for the last year. She’s had operations, physical therapy, and is still a work in progress, but her faith has grown through the process. There were times that she struggled, and it is understandable, but on most days that smile that can split open wide did as she expressed confidence that she’ll get better, and that God is with her and her husband, Branden.

Kim is part of a ministry called More Than a Meal. It’s a group of people reaching out to a homeless community in cold Colorado Springs called Tent City. They bring food, coats and shoes and blankets, and they worship together every Saturday morning.

Branden slept in Tent City several nights, building relationships with the men, trying to understand what it’s like to live in the elements day and night.

I’m proud of Kim (and Branden) in a hundred different ways. I’m grateful for their faith, and glad that Kim is still here to hang out with Aunt Snuz. And I’m touched by her heart for the homeless. Here are a few pictures from the ministry, More Than a Meal.
