big things make me happy

April 16, 2010 | Just me

I’m usually a small-things-make-me-happy kind of girl, but I’m in Manitou Springs, CO and I suddenly realize the big things make me happy, too.

Like the Rockies. I’m on a business trip. I’m in my room, knocking things off my list, and suddenly I see the amazing view outside my window. I’m in the foothills. The mountains wrap around this quaint town with winding streets and brick sidewalks. Trees jut fifty feet in the crisp mountain air, while spring flowers border the streets.

It’s creation at its best.

I wonder if those who live here forget how majestic this view is or if it gets lost because it’s too familiar, or they’re just too busy to notice.

Maybe those who come through my town ask the same thing. Do I see the green that blankets pastures and lawns and hills and trees? Do I see the azaelas blooming? Do I see the hills, the river, the Oklahoma sky (which is quite amazing)?

Sometimes this kind of joy escapes me because I let my tasks, items on my to-do list, or my rush to get from a to b crowd it out. Little things choking out the sheer joy of what can be so inspiring.

I have to be in a meeting in an hour. But though my to-do list is long, I’m stopping for a moment to appreciate the really big things.

And that makes me happy.

Beautiful picture! I agree, sometimes we do miss the beauty of what God has created.

I’m a third gen graduate of Manitou Springs High School. I love that you love my little hometown so much. I also met my husband at Patsy’s Candies (did you get there for some carmel corn or taffy?) in 1985. My mom still lives about 4 miles from there, it is a magical, heavenly place!
