May 7, 2010 | Just me

Chi Alpha showed up at my house last night in full force. It’s a college ministry at a local university and we’ve been lucky enough to be involved in a small way. Mainly food and fun, which I love.

37 students spilled out of my small living room onto the deck and into the back yard. They played ping pong, some kind of amazing Ninja game, croquet, frisbee football, and then they ate, and ate some more. You know how it is when you’re at college and someone offers home cooked food.

I don’t know why I love it so much, but having my house filled with people makes me happy. Cooking for a large group makes me happy. Maybe it’s because, with Richard in the Masters’ program full-time, I don’t cook anymore. Me and my Lean Cuisine hang out at night while he’s in school.

The hugs at the end of the night are pretty amazing, too.

Oh, and we played Nertz, a cool card game that makes my brain cells cramp up, but I’m pretty sure it made me a little smarter at the end of the day.

Simple things. Simple fun. But the best kind of “ministry” for me.

Yes, it is fun to have a house full of guests and a lot of “good” hard work. YOu will love being a Nana…it is so amazing and so much fun. I was not a Nan untl I was 54 years old and that seems old, but I am catching up now and will have 5 by the end of Sept. Our fist granddaughter being born in March and three sweet little boys before that and another girl due in Sept. What wonderful gifts from God our Father!!

  4. Michele says:

    That sounds wonderful.

    Thank you!
I enjoy reading your devotionals and all Proverbs 31 readings each day. They help me start my day at work – with my mind focused on our Lord – the one who gave us this day to rejoice in Him and His salvation!

    Hoping to win signed books!

I really enjoyed your devotional today about the family tree. It was such a good reminder that God can graft in new beginnings and prune out diseased traits and patterns. I’m believing that!

    Suzie,

I read your devotion today on the Proverbs 31 website. It really was encouraging. I have two teenage nieces who live with me. They have been with me and my family for just about their whole lives but it wasn’t until a few years ago that legally they became “mine”. The time sure has flown. One graduated high school last year and the other this year. I remember when they were younger praying for them that the mistakes that their parents made would not have a hold on them, that the cycle of bad choices would be broken. I thought at that time that if I could just get them through high school things would be a little easier. But now that I am at that point, I’ve come to find out that my job is not easier, it has just changed some. I still constantly have to be covering them in prayer that as they journey on to the next phase of their lives that they would stay close to God, seeking His direction in every decision they make, and that they would continue to be victorious in overcoming their past family hsitory. They do not have to live in that past and make those same mistakes. God loves them and has a great future planned for them!

I enjoyed your devotion today. Games has always been a big hit in our home…even more so now that we have grandchldren. They really enjoy playing board games that their daddy’s once played as little boys! No doubts that you will be an awesome grandparent. Blessings to you and your growing family!

  10. Joanne Beasley says:

    Hi Suzanne,
I read your article in Encouragement for Today (May10,2010)entitled Reshaping My Family Tree in email. I could so relate to what you’re saying except for the Grandma part…not there yet. But I’ve often wondered how other moms who don’t know Jesus make it through this life…I’ve always depended on Him. And what a beautiful journey it has been. I, too, love having kids in our home ~ a house full ~ right now it’s teenagers but I hope to always have an open and full house! God bless you for sharing!
    Joanne :)

  11. Joanne Beasley says:

Oh, I forgot to say, we love the game of NERTS! :)

  12. Suzie says:

Austin, a few months? How about a few days, weeks? : ) Joanne, I wish you were closer so we could play a game. I love Nertz!

  13. Angela Walker says:

Thank you so much for the encouragement today. It has been the uplifting words this mom of 3 needed this morning. I have been consumed this morning with feelings that I spend way to much time at work and not nearly enought time enjoying my true business of being a mom. Thank you for the words of comfort that I can daily allow Jesus to guide me as a mother. God is so awesome to allow a person to hear or read just the write words at the right time. You have been a blessing to my heart this morning and I thank you, I thank the Proverbs 31 ministry, most of all I thank God.
