ready, set, go!

May 19, 2010 | Just me

I am sore, people.

My son and DIL run 1/2 and whole marathons. I know where Ryan got it. There was a time when this girl was fast! I remember flying past the guy’s team in school and all the girls cheering as the skinny girl cleared the finish line.

But I also remember music on 8 tracks and phones with cords.

I love to walk, and was hitting the gym or track a couple times a week. A class here or there was thrown in. But I started walking again seriously a few weeks ago. And last week a walking friend joined me and we meet every morning at 6:30 to walk 3 miles.

“Run a 5k, mom,” Ryan has said a few million times. “I know you can do it.”

So I slipped outside one morning and I ran a half-block.

Walking fast and running slow should be the same thing, right? Tell my lungs that. I was bending over huffing and puffing like a asthmatic 95-year-old after one block. My legs understood the program. My lungs refused to get involved.

I did it again the next morning. I made it a block and three steps. So back to walking really fast.

Then last Sunday our pastor announced that our church would sponsor a 5k. $25 and an admission form was the only thing it took, and the entry fees would all go to missions.

My missions heart thumped in my chest. And before I knew it I had signed up and pressured people beside me and behind me to do the same.

It’s official. I’m going to be running a 5k on July 4th. Or maybe running/walking it. I don’t know.

But the skinny girl is still inside me, telling me to do my best and celebrate the $10k they are trying to raise in the 5k.

I’ll keep you updated. ForĀ  now I’m gently pushing my 15-minute walking mile to 14, and we’ll see where that leads. I’m a little sore this morning as I type, sitting in the parking lot by the track.

If you are a runner and want to encourage me, encourage away! I think I’m going to need it!

You go girl is all I can say!!!! I think it’s fantastic you are trying a 5K, what a great example you are!!!! You are taking something that’s very difficult and chipping away at it and you will totally do it! I started running last Oct. I did my first 5K in Nov and I cried when I got across. I did it in just over 30 minutes and I couldn’t breathe at all and thought I would die but the joy that I felt was soooo wonderful. I am not an athlete or a good runner but I chip away at it. It’s hard stuff. But I give all my workouts over to the Lord and He gets me through them. He will give you what you need and you will feel amazed!!!!!

How wonderful! I ran my first 5K last Nov. and i never ran before. I started practicing in Oct and it took every week to get me to sustain 3.1miles of running. Not only did I run the whole time but I beat my regular pace and finished in just under 31min. Then I did another one 2 weeks after, Turkey Trot and I finished in under 30 min. I was so happy! Yes, I was sore but strong. I still keep at it and it’s hard but the way I feel after is worth it. I hand over every workout to the Lord and it is Him that gets me through each and every one. You can do it! What a great thing!!

How exciting! I’m sure it’ll be great, and you’ll be amazed how your body adjusts if you give it the slow progression it needs. You’ll cross that finish line and immediately think “When can I do it again?”.

I ran my first marathon in March after never having run more than 4 miles in my life before training, but I was not about to go down alone! I talked-err…harassed …my 40-something mother into walking the half-marathon of the same race and she did great! Now she’s walk/running 5k’s and is planning for another half-marathon all on her own initiative! It does become addicting!

And honestly, when you do it for a cause of Christ, it is truly amazing to see how He provides you with the grace, and yes, the energy, to make it through. Look forward to reading your post-race story!
