Baby Elle update
June 7, 2010 | Family: Nurturing Family, Just me
Leslie is a little over 34 weeks. That means sometime in the next 3 to 6 weeks I’ll be a grandma. We had a second shower for her. The Eller family shower. In true Eller form the guys dropped by “just to say hello” but ended up staying for most of the shower. Leslie (pictured below, middle) received beautiful baby clothes, a quilt made by my sister, a blanket hand crocheted by my mother, and another blanket made by Elle’s other grandma-to-be.
As the time approaches, it feels unknown. I know what it is to be a mom, and even to be a grandma-to-be, but a grandma?
The other night I went hiking with friends and they brought their two young children. Ryan and Kate and I went ahead, snaking our way up the steep path. As we hiked we detoured to pick up cool things like pine cones and interesting rocks. We spied a granddaddy longlegs and checked out a hollow spot in a tree.
It brought back memories. I remember dishes in the sink, but wanting to play outside. To hold conversations with my kids. To walk in the pasture and explore with Leslie, Ryan, and Melissa.
I loved those moments. The dishes were there when I got back, and they were clean before the night ended, but the most important part of my day was listening to my kids.
And it hit me as I walked, holding Kate’s hand, calling out to Ryan to slow down a bit because there were cliffs ahead. That’s what it will be like:
Me, the same as before, just older.
And suddenly the unknown seems pretty amazing.

I loved your trip down memory lane. It took me on one of my own. I love being an abuela (grandma), but I’m more aware now of how fleeting time really is and how so many things cry out for our attention. I pray for wisdom to passionately live for Christ and enjoy His gift of family and friends along the way.
