a little girlfriend time
June 11, 2010 | Just thinking out loud
I’m hanging out with some friends tonight. I’m so excited.
The reality is that I’m not the greatest friend, though I love my friends a great deal. I get wrapped up in working. Or there’s just too many weekends filled. Family. Speaking. Showers. Weddings. I love hanging out with Richard, and time with him holds great value. So rather than juggle, friendship time gets put on the back burner.
My good friends drop hints on FB, or send an e-mail, or when I see them in person they pull me aside. “I know you’re busy, girl, but we have to get together.”
My sister, Mindy, has a circle of friends that she’s invested in for nearly 25 years. A circle of five friends from college through marriage and babies, through running kids from place to place, to the teen years, through marriage, and for one — a grandbaby. They’ve made it through one spouse leaving for Iraq after several years in the military, just before his retirement. Through the pain of children making decisions that hurt a momma’s heart. Through questions about whether to stay in a marriage that is in crisis.
They’ve laughed a lot together.
They are like sisters.
So, I hear you, my sweet friends. I’ll try harder because you are worth it, and I need you.
It was easy in school, in college. But as time passed, friendship became an investment. It’s harder, but the value gained increased as well.
If any of my friends are reading this, I love you like crazy. I’ll try harder. I promise. See you tonight!
