June 14, 2010 | Just me

Okay, I’m 50 and training for a 5k.

Richard and I have both been running/walking. My training has consisted of walking 3 miles every morning at 6:30 a.m. at a local track.  Sometimes I go out in the evening and run/walk the 3 miles.

Richard’s has consisted of running 3 to 4 miles a few evenings a weeks, and going to a bootcamp exercise class every morning at 5:30 a.m.

Guess which one is doing the best?

Richard competed in his first 5k run this Saturday. He did really well, beating his training time, and placing 3rd in his age bracket.

It’s not a competition between us.  Really.

It’s simply a decision to do something different. We love to hike. We love to raft down the Illinois. We love to walk.

But this is pushing it for me. I don’t really love running….yet.

It hurts my lungs. It makes me want to lie in the grass and suck in air after I’m through. It makes me sweaty, and my face turn red like flames of fire.

Watching Richard and the others run the race made me want to try again. I don’t want to win any awards. I just want to perservere. To stick with it and get to where I can knock out 3.2 miles.  And maybe even to enjoy it a little.

For today I just want the guy I love to know that I’m really proud of him. Way to go, babe!

I love running but have been unable to physically for some time. I’m planning to run a 5k in September with some friends and that has motivated me to get out and run again. To me there are few times when I’m closer to God. It’s a way to worship Him and I feel so physically and spiritually strong. BUT running is not for everyone and a good walk is a great way to spend time with God in this wonderful world He created. Thanks for sharing.
