sister/sister day
June 23, 2010 | Family: Nurturing Family, Just me
My sister and I planned a date last week. With our growing families, our jobs, it’s harder to connect. When we do, it’s usually in a large group on a holiday. Sister/sister time seems to get lost.
So we made a date to swim, to go eat some great Tai food, and then to watch Toy Story in 3D on the big screen at IMax.
My daughter called me. “Um, mom. I’m going to be in Tulsa that day because of a friend’s shower the night before. What about changing your sister/sister day to a sister/sister/niece-daughter day?”
My son heard that Melissa was joining us. He called. “I don’t want to interrupt,” he said. “But I’m off that day.”
So now it was a sister/sister/niece-daughter/nephew-son day.
Mindy’s son found out that Ryan and Melissa were hanging out with us, so he and Brittney decided to join us. When Melissa and Ryan’s spouses found out there was a party going on, Josh drove up from Fayetteville and Kristin joined us after work, driving in from downtown Tulsa.
The day was amazing. The Tai food was good. The conversation fun. And the movie?
I laughed until I cried. Maybe it was the candy we picked up at Target right before, sharing our goods with each other as we watched the movie. Maybe it was how ridiculous we looked in our oversized 3D glasses. Maybe it was sitting by my sister and realizing that we had never been able to sit together at church or anywhere else without getting the giggles, or dissolving into laughter.
It was a good, good day. A sister/sister/lots of nephews, nieces, sons, daughters day.
And at the end of it, Mindy and I shared how blessed we were not only to have each other, but that our grown kids still liked to hang out with us.
We are going to try another sister/sister day in the future. Maybe we’ll have sister/sister time or it will be a sister/sister party.
Who knows? But either way, it will be fun.
Do you ever feel disconnected? Do you let too much time go by without connecting with the people you love best? What is one thing you can do today to reconnect?

You guys are a hoot! I love it! My family REALLY does enjoy doing stuff together too. I totally understand how the snowball effect could happen in a fun plan like that!
God bless you guys! And goodluck on your next S/S try!
