Misperceptions about Jesus
August 31, 2010 | Faith: Knowing Christ, Feelings: Intentional freedom, Video Bible study
When I meet people as I travel across the nation, and they discover where I live, many have mixed responses. One person asked, “Do you live in the dustbowl?”
I had to laugh because where I live is beautiful, with lots of lakes, and a winding river and bluffs and hills. This video shows how the dustbowl perception is skewed, not reality at all.
Often we have also have misperceptions about Jesus. Let’s dig deeper into that together.
This week’s reading: Mark 4:10 through 6:13
Questions for this week’s study:
1. As you read, note how people responded to Jesus.
2. Why did they respond the way they did?
3. What was Jesus looking for in those who he encountered?
4. How did you form your perception of God?

Questions:
1. As you read, note how people responded to Jesus.
[Noted]
2. Why did they respond the way they did?
[They were full of unbelief.]
3. What was Jesus looking for in those who he encountered?
[Belief and faith in Him.]
4. How did you form your perception of God?
[By what those around me were saying and reading God's word, although tainted by the influence of those around me.]
By pulling myself away from the misinterpretations and attitudes of those around me I’ve been able to gain a more clear picture of what God’s purpose for me is. It’s only in the beginning stages. I have lots to relearn! Praise Him for leading me to the places [like here] to help in my relearning. AMEN!

2)Why did they respond the way they did?
The people could not understand until their eyes were opened by God. I believe their responses were based on not being able to understand and maybe they didn’t want to understand because of fear. Jesus was completely different than anyone they had ever known. Different really scares people because they lack understanding.
3)What was Jesus looking for in those who he encountered? I believe this goes back to Mark 2:17. Jesus came to heal the sick and save the sinners. Until you understand your need, Jesus can’t help you. The people that came to Jesus for help, understood they had a need. When Jesus helped these, the others around wanted him to leave because they did not understand.
4)How did you form your perception of God?
Being in church all my life my perception of God was formed from the way I was raised. I have struggled to find out who Jesus really is to me. I was saved when I was about 12, and I have been struggling to grow since. I think this goes back to the seed being planted. I have definitely had my ups and downs and it has been a journey, but I guess that’s what life and growing are all about. A journey. We can take the journey alone or with God by our side. I am very thankful I was raised in church, I see now that the journey could and would have been much hard without God by my side. My prayer recently has been for the Holy Ghost to reveal the scripture to me personally. I have had to set aside the beliefs of my parents and find out for me personally. Many times I have wondered “Why am I doing what I am doing?” “Is it because God is directing me or my parents’ voices.” As a child I believed my dad had a direct link to God and he always knew what was right. After growing up, I now know my dad wasn’t perfect, just because he was a preacher. That was a hard thing to accept, but just as my perception of my earthly father had to change, so did my perception of my Heavenly Father. However, with the changing perception, I see how my earthly father and Heavenly Father, were always faithfully there for me when I called out for help. God was there all the time, when my earthly dad couldn’t be physically with me. Thank you God for my earthly father and mother. I see now they did the best they could and I see also how the growing process never ends. My parents are still growing and learning more about God. I am so thankful for my personal relationship with God. I am thankful to have a better understanding of what that means and I am thankful to be able to see God guiding my path. Yes, there are times I still wonder where God is taking me and if he is still there listening to my same prayers over and over. But I am not going to be perfect until I get to heaven. God is still working on me and I am so thankful.
I grew up a preacher’s daughter. Is that enough said?
Thanks Suzie for this bible study. I know God lead me here.
September 7th, 2010 at 9:34 amI am on the catch up of your videos….I am loving what you have to say. God has led me to a few different online studies and they have really been just refreshing to a thirsty soul. Thank you for taking your time to do this
I am looking forward to your new one and thought you were very right to know “who He is” so we can move on to the next, wherever that may be. Its so KEY to KNOW Him without that we cant even know ourselves….thank you Suzie!
