Why so slow?

November 22, 2010 | Faith: Knowing Christ, Feelings: Intentional freedom, Q&A: Dear Friend

Dear Suzie,

I love your devotional about anger it was right on time. I have been healing but its been very slow. I was just wondering if you had any suggestions. M.

Dear friend,

Healing takes time. Sometimes its slow, but if you are moving forward I pray that you’ll celebrate single step, every move forward. Acknowledge it, praise God for it, instead of focusing on all that you have left to do.

It took time for me, too, M, but I discovered that the time lapse was part of the process. I was growing, stretching, overcoming. There’s a cool verse in the Bible that says that God will prune those branches that are fruitful (John 15:1-2).

I just spent most of the morning trimming back a beautiful butterfly bush. It nearly reached to the eaves of my house, and afterwards a stack of branches sat on the ground. To the ordinary eye it would seem that I was damaging the bush. But any gardener knows that I’m helping it reach higher, grow stronger, and bloom more beautiful in the next season.

It takes time to put aside anger, to find healthy responses instead of unhealthy ones. It takes time to trust God, that He’s got you tightly wrapped in His love. It takes time to stop taking things personal, and see people as works in progress. It takes time to fill the gaps left in your life.

But it will happen. It is happening. Today I pray that God blesses you and wraps His arms around you,

Suzie
