Walking in a new direction: marriage – temptation

October 12, 2011 | Family: Nurturing Family

“Seriously?”

Has it ever happened to you? A marriage that you thought was loving and solid fell apart because a new person entered the picture. Your heart is heavy. You want to reach out. You don’t know what to say, or do.

But then you look at your own marriage. If it happened to them, could it happen to you?

To be honest, I’d like to say that I am rock solid in this area. My marriage is not just strong, it makes me happy. I couldn’t imagine making a choice in this area that would hurt him, or destroy my children, or grandchildren–or me.

But the reality is that I’m not above temptation, no one is.

To walk in a new direction in your marriage: You and I aren’t above temptation. We need to rely on God daily.

Relying on my Savior daily keeps those areas healthy and whole, even in the more challenging times. But also in the good times.

Do I pray for my husband daily?

Do I rely on God to lead me, to give me love and joy in the harder times?

Do I trust God to be my need-meeter, instead of my husband?

Am I aware of temptation? Do I call temptation what it is – the enemy’s trap to make us feel a certain way, or respond a certain way, or flirt with danger with no long-term perception of what is taking place.

Do I walk away from temptation?

Do I rely on God to show me ways to love, to laugh, to grow in my marriage?

Have I invited God to be an integral part of my relationship?

Today: Don’t live in fear, that’s just as big a trap. But invite God into your marriage. Ask Him to show you small temptations that might produce so much damage in the lives of those you love the most.

If you are tempted, unmask it. Take away the feelings. Ask the tougher, more honest questions: What results will come from this? How will it affect you long-term? Your children? Your spouse? What need is it filling that God can fill instead? Is there a rough patch that temptation numbs? Can you work with your spouse to strengthen your relationship?
