Comments from She Speaks

June 27, 2008 | calendar, ministries, writing

At the She Speaks conference, I shared my normal working attire: blue jersey shorts, a tank top or T-shirt, barefoot, no makeup, and my hair in a ponytail.

Woman at work -- wearing a tank and jeans!

I wish you could see me now. The only thing is that I’m not wearing a ponytail. Otherwise, dead on.

Some professional, huh? : )

But it’s the words that flow and the work ethic that matters, and I can dress up when I’m traveling to conferences, eating out with my hubby, or stepping outside the door into the real world.

Here are a few of the comments from friends made at She Speaks (who thankfully don’t care what I’m wearing right now). Love you girls!

From Tammy: Your workshop was outstanding! One of my absolute favorites! Thank you for your “tips” and your “transparency.” I smile as I sit here with glasses on, hair in pony tail, wearing sweat pants! (more…)

That thing that HE does

June 25, 2008 | calendar, faith, ministries

What a wonderful weekend!

I love it when God does His thing. I spoke twice at She Speaks (a conference for women who want to write and/or speak). I shared the message of making your faith your own with a group of beautiful teen girls, and then I was scheduled to speak at an after-dinner coffeehouse writers’ event.

This is the deal. It was the worst hour of the day. The women had just eaten dinner. They got up that morning at 7. They went to bed the night before after midnight. It wasn’t a fascinating topic, though it is one that I’m passionate about - The Things I Wish I Had Known When I First Started Writing.

So the odds were stacked against that presentation. And yet something very cool happened.

God showed up.

Don’t you love it when that happens? Somehow, out of a writing topic, He gently ministered to a woman who is a breast cancer survivor, to a mom of teens, to a woman estranged from her loved one, and to many more. After the presentation, many women lined up to share their story.

Have I mentioned how much I love hearing your stories?

This is the one thing I really have learned. It’s not about the woman with the mike, or even the carefully prepared and prayed-over presentation. Somehow, some way, God can take ordinary words and place them in the hearts of His girls — the women sitting in the audience with their private joys, their private pain, their secrets, and their dreams.

Because He knows them and loves them.

I walked away this weekend in love with Jesus all over again.

It’s been wet and soggy here in beautiful Green Country. I leave tomorrow for Charlotte, NC.

The ocean.

Friends.

Fun!

I’m speaking at She Speaks, a wonderful ministry that trains women and young women who desire to speak or write. While I’m there, I’ll take a side trip to the beach and hang out with a few good friends. (more…)

Focus on the Family Broadcast

January 23, 2008 | calendar, media interviews

The Mom I Want to Be: Rising Above Your Past to Give Your Kids a Great FutureI will be interviewed by LuAnne Crane of Focus on the Family each weekend in February. I hope you tune in as I talk about issues such as letting go of the past, forgiveness, shaping our children’s memories, gaining new perspective, unpacking unhealthy parenting baggage, helpful and practical tools to give your children stability, love, and a safe and loving home.

You can learn more about this program when you visit the website at http://listen.family.org/weekend. If you hit the “Listen Now” link, you’ll be able (eventually) to hear the program online; or if you hit the “Find a Station” link you’ll be directed to a series of pull-down menus that will reveal where you can listen to the broadcast in your local area.

I will be in Escondido, California this weekend teaching a workshop for moms on The Mom I Want to Be at Hearts at Home Mom’s Day Out conference. It’s not too late to register if you are in the San Diego area.

I am grateful for new friends, and for the stories shared by these beautiful moms.

If I met you today, welcome to daretobelieve. I loved sharing time with Sand Springs MOPS today.

Answering your questions from the TCW article

November 7, 2007 | articles, calendar, community

I want to apologize for taking so long to get back to each of you. I was swamped with e-mails after the Rise of Raunch article in Today’s Christian Woman.

I am excited about how passionate you each are, and the questions that you asked. Rather than send out 100 e-mails, I’ll try to answer your questions here. If you need more info, please feel free to contact me. Okay? I’m encouraged that so many are interested in reaching our girls in this society.

QUESTIONS

  • Do you work with girls on a long-term basis?

ICRS Atlanta

July 19, 2007 | calendar, interviews

Me and three other Harvest House authorsICRS is a national trade show, but it’s more than that for me. Each year I am reminded of why I love writing, and ministry.

This year was a hectic year. Two of my books were released. A discipleship book for teens, Making It Real: Whose Faith Is It Anyway? through Kregel Publishers, and The Woman I Am Becoming: Embracing the Chase for Identity, Faith, and Destiny through Harvest House.

My days were crazy, running from the convention center to the CNN Omni to Westin and back. On Monday, the 9th, I signed books twice, interviewed with FamilyLife (Campus Crusade) radio, met with the Intercontinental News Service, and taped a broadcast with Atlanta TV station, WATC Channel 57. The Edge (Youth Encounter), Kansas City, MO July 20-24

July 14, 2007 | calendar

The Edge (Youth Encounter)

I get to hang out with teens at Youth Encounter - Edge National Convention on July 20-24 in Kansas City, MO.

If you are in the area, come connect with Hawk Nelson, The Skit Guys, and speakers Jeremy Kingsley, and me as we worship, teaching, friendship, and hands-on ministry.

I’m digging deep in scripture this week, and I have a message burning on my heart for teens. I’d love your prayers. It’s a busy week, speaking seven times in four days, hanging out with lots and lots of youth, but also a privilege and I’m pumped to have the opportunity.
