a life of content

I’m speaking on Saturday to a group of women locally. It’s a conference on mind, body, and spirit, and I’m the “spirit” part. My topic is Living a Life of Content, and it’s a personal message that I have to keep close.
It’s challenging when you are a communicator and your passion for the topic fizzles.
Or worse, when you just keep on talking. . . (more…)

It’s a Girl! {{P31 Whirlwind Carnival!}}
We’re celebrating Fat Tuesday in a whole different way at Proverbs 31 Ministries today.
Tons of giveaways! A carnival of amazing posts, prizes, and best of all lots of great new friendships.
I’m so glad you stopped by today. All of the Proverbs 31 team are celebrating something today. What am I celebrating? Let me show you…
Her name is Elle and she’s my first grandchild. Isn’t she beautiful? Elle will arrive on or around July 16, 2010. I can’t wait!
I stood in awe in the doctor’s office last week as I “saw” her for the first time. She moved her mouth. She fist pumped in the air. Her little heart beat in perfect rhythm. (more…)

Help Haiti Live

Doyou love music? Love children? Here’s a way you can tune in to some of the best Christian musical artists and help thousands of children in Haiti.
If you visit here often, you know that I’m a big fan of Compassion International. I would stand on street corners and tell strangers about this organization.

One, because my family is privileged to sponsor a beautiful little girl named Buli.
Two, because I’ve traveled with Compassion and seen their work up close and personal.
One month following the 7.1 earthquake that struck Haiti, an all-star cast of musicians is gathering for “Help Haiti Live,” a two-city ticketed concert event taking place on February 27th, 2010 to benefit Compassion International’s Haiti.

More than a meal
One year ago my niece Kim was thrown 60 feet in the air, her helmet split in two, and landed broken (see my blog post that week). She was flown to a trauma hospital in a nearby state. My sister and I rushed to Kansas, hoping that she was okay. Her back was broken. Her knee was blown open. She had several breaks from the sternum down. She had a massive concussion, asking where she was and what had happened every 30 to 60 seconds.
It was scary. She’s been in recovery for the last year. She’s had operations, physical therapy, and is still a work in progress, but her faith has grown through the process. There were times that she struggled, and it is understandable, but on most days that smile that can split open wide did as she expressed confidence that she’ll get better, and that God is with her and her husband, Branden.
Kim is part of a ministry called More Than a Meal. It’s a group of people reaching out to a homeless community in cold Colorado Springs called Tent City. They bring food, coats and shoes and blankets, and they worship together every Saturday morning. (more…)

treasure map
January 26, 2010 | community

The car whipped to the curb. Dad jumped out and picked up the “treasure” he had spotted on the side of the road. It might have been an old hammer or a bag that looked like it contained something of value. All I knew was that I was as excited as he was to see what he found!
I’m am my dad’s daughter. I don’t have time to treasure hunt as much as I would like, but I love, love, love spening an afternoon strolling through an antique shop or hanging out at an estate sale. I love to look through old books and old costume jewelry, and sometimes I even bid on them.
But this is where I’m also my dad’s daughter. If I win the bid, I don’t usually hang on to it. I love the thrill of putting it on Ebay or Amazon and seeing what it might bring. I might lose a little. I might gain a little. But sometimes I discover that my $10 purchase was a huge success. It was a treasure!
Recently I bought two photo albums that had pictures and ticket stubs from the 80’s. I was a young mom in the 80’s and I definitely wasn’t hanging out with any cool rockin’ bands, but something said, “this is valuable”. (more…)

Haiti earthquake

I’m interrupting our conversation on crossroads for one day. As many of you know, I’m a huge fan of Compassion International. I traveled to Ecuador a couple of months ago to a Compassion project, and as a family Richard and I sponsor a little girl in India.

The catastrophic earthquake that hit Haiti on January 12 has resulted in unfathomable chaos and devastation for hundreds of thousands of children and families.
Compassion sponsors and donors serve more than 65,000 children in Haiti. At least a third of them live in the areas that were hardest hit.
I am asking you to please send a gift today to help precious children and their families, and to encourage others to give to Compassion International. The people of Haiti desperately need our help and hope. (more…)
