I can’t wait to share pics and stories, and there are many. As I stood in the back of a pickup today driving down curving cobbled mountainous roads, I thought of the last Office episode I watched where Pam told Jim that you needed to take mental snapshots of those special moments. She held up an imaginary camera and clicked it.
I have experienced many of those moments. I am leaving for the airport and will blog as soon as I can after arriving back in the US.
But for now, I sense your prayers and I’m grateful.
Many of you mailed blankets — some bought, some homemade — all beautiful. I’m packing them to take with me on Monday to Ecuador for the babies in the Infant Survival program. Some also sent clothing and baby food.
Thank you!
I know it was a sacrifice, and I’m grateful. (more…)
I remember driving down the street in El Salvador. A little girl stood by the side of the road, her long thin legs exposed to the thigh.
“She’s a prostitute,” the missionary said. “Most likely mom or dad is addicted.”
I looked back. I saw little faces in a nearby bush sprouting out of the hot sidewalk.
That trip I spent a lot of time at the rescue house, painting, working in the hot sun. I traveled to the slums with the team who brought nourishment, both spiritual and physical, to children and families. We spent time at the King’s Castle, a beautiful oasis for children in the stark reality of suffering. (more…)
Compassion International is partnering with radio stations, media, churches and bloggers to spread the word about the Global Food Crisis and raise funds that will make a real difference to those impacted by it.
WHY IS THE CRISIS?
Overshadowed by recent political and financial economic news, the UN World Food Programme calls the current global food crisis “a phenomenon, a silent tsunami,” that is affecting millions of families in every nation on every continent. This global food crisis is more rapid, urgent and devastating than any other in the history of our planet.
WHY IS THE CRISIS HAPPENING?
The cost of food staples have roughly doubled in many countries where Compassion serves. Some of the original factors that turned this trend into a world calamity recently include unstable oil prices, increased meat consumption in countries like India and China, droughts in major crop-producing countries, and increased production of biofuels.
HOW CAN YOU HELP?

It was dark and we bumped down the street in a hot bus. “Look the other way,” someone called and several guys turned their heads. A woman stood with bare breasts and a leg pushed out at an angle.
I didn’t look away. I couldn’t. Because not far from her were three little children crouched under a bush. The harsh street light brushed their faces.
The next day the same hot bus stalled in traffic. A little guy raced toward us, dirty water sloshing in a tin bucket. He stretched to reach the lower half of the bus windows. “Get away,” the driver called. I pulled out a few dollars and held it out the window. The boy grabbed it and ran. (more…)
My daughter attended She Speaks with me in Charlotte, NC, this summer. She came into the room one night holding a picture up of a little girl from India.
“It’s my new Compassion child,” she said. “I’m a sponsor.” She held out the picture.
The little girl was different from the other pictures I had looked through that afternoon. I had wondered how people could choose among such beautiful children that pulled at your heart strings. This child looked angry. She stared at the camera, her eyes dark, her mouth a straight line.
