It’s a Girl! {{P31 Whirlwind Carnival!}}
We’re celebrating Fat Tuesday in a whole different way at Proverbs 31 Ministries today.
Tons of giveaways! A carnival of amazing posts, prizes, and best of all lots of great new friendships.
I’m so glad you stopped by today. All of the Proverbs 31 team are celebrating something today. What am I celebrating? Let me show you…
Her name is Elle and she’s my first grandchild. Isn’t she beautiful? Elle will arrive on or around July 16, 2010. I can’t wait!
I stood in awe in the doctor’s office last week as I “saw” her for the first time. She moved her mouth. She fist pumped in the air. Her little heart beat in perfect rhythm. (more…)

memories, like the peanut brittle I used to love

Why is it that that Christmas evokes such strong memories wrapped around food? When I was a teen I went to a small church in Tulsa, Oklahoma. At that time home was hard, and church truly was a sanctuary. I hung out with friends on Friday or Saturday night. I loved youth group and activities, doing silly things like toilet papering my friends’ yards, but also spent serious time in the altar talking to God.
Small things meant a lot. Spending time at a church member’s house and watching godly fathers and mothers interact. Playing games at their tables, eating popcorn.
But there was another tradition I fell in love with at that small church.
Every Christmas the ladies congregated in the small kitchen and poured out huge hot pans of caramel-colored liquid dotted with hundreds of raw peanuts. It was the most light peanut brittle I had ever eaten then–or since.
It literally crisped when you bit into it, and melted on your tongue.
They sold it in white square boxes and I treasured my box! I can still smell the slightly peanuty odor that came from the kitchen.
I’ve tried to find that recipe, but with no luck! I’m hoping that one of you have a great peanut brittle recipe I can try.
What about other favorite recipes? What one candy, entree, side dish evokes memories of Christmas for you? I’d love it if you would share it!

sweet Christmas deal!
I love it when I stumble into a great deal. I went into a local overstock store to find inexpensive, but pretty baskets to fill with homemade candy for Christmas.
I was checking out some of the items when I found some great China pieces. They were selling separately, were beautiful, marked 1979 but in perfect condition, brand new in the package.
One item was gravy boat and saucer, others were teacups and saucers, and a few other items like a coffee server.
I bought the coffee server for $3.99 minus 25%. The china teacups and saucers were $1.99 minus 25%. Way cheaper than the baskets, and much more beautiful.
When I arrived home I plugged in the name of the China, just to learn a little bit more about it. I found the Coffee server first. I was shocked to realize that it’s listed on http://replacement.com for $195.00!
I plan to give some of the China pieces filled with oreo truffles to a few family members and special friends, and I’m pumped about it! We are on a tight budget, and this fit in our budget, but it turned out to be more valuable than I could have ever afforded. This makes me happy!
Last year I shared the Oreo Truffles with friends and they were such a huge hit (and easy to do) that it just makes sense to do it again.
Here’s the recipe!
Oreo Truff Balls
8 ounces softened cream cheese or whipped cream cheese
18 ounces package of Oreo cookies, crushed
2 cups semi-sweet or milk chocolate chips
1 tablespoon shortening

Mix cream cheese with electric mixer until fluffy. Add the crushed Oreos and beat on high until well mixed. Chill for at least 2 hours in the freezer. Then roll Oreo cookie mix into one inch Oreo Balls.
Next, melt the chocolate chips and shortening with a double boiler or in the microwave.
Dip the Oreo balls completely into the melted chocolate using tongs or a toothpick.
Put on wax paper. After the Oreo balls harden, keep them in the refrigerator.
Makes about 3 or 4 dozen Oreo Balls. (You can melt some white or dark chocolate and lace the balls with delicate chocolate stripes, which makes them look beautiful. I usually do this and get tons of compliments!)

Crazy hair

I can’t fix my hair. I tried to put a barrette in it the other day to get my hair out of my eyes and it stood up like a telephone pole by my ear. So Mr. Richard has to help me.
That’s what he calls himself. I sit on a folding chair in front of the bathroom mirror and we do a tango beauty session. He holds the blow dryer and I one-hand the brush.
When my hair is dry he straight irons it.
It’s hilarious. One of the best parts of my every-other-day.
He’s only burned my ear once, but that jerky movement you make when 400 degrees hits the tip of your ear is ugly to a broken collarbone.
Other than that, he’s pretty good. In fact, I think I’d like to have Mr. Richard as my full-time beauty consultant. I get laughter and straight hair. A recent session looked like this:
Suzie: Babe, you’re burning my neck. Can you move the blowdryer to the hair and off the skin?
Richard: Like this? (smoke rises from my scalp)
Suzie: No, more like this, hon. On the hair. Move it back and forth.
Richard: Mr. Richard doesn’t like bossy clients.
Suzie: (laughter)
Richard pulls out a clippy and puts my hair in sections and starts to straighten. We hear a sizzle sound and both jump. It’s a spot of conditioner that we left in the hair. I’m not that good in the shower yet.
Suzie: Hon, that piece is sticking straight out. Can you straighten it down toward my face instead?
Richard: I like it this way.
Suzie: But, could you do it anyway?
Richard: I think it looks nice like this.
I never know what it’s going to look like. One day I had flippy hair. It was kinda cute. Another day I had flat, flat hair. Not so great. The lumpy hair day was another bad one. This past Saturday it looked really good. I think he’s got it!
He’s most fun when he’s teasing the crown. We only do that when I’m going out in public. The first time he complained because it didn’t make sense to straighten it all, and then to “frizz” it up in the back. I explained that it would look good.
Yesterday he really got into the “frizzing” part and my hair stood up like a rooster in back. But once he combed it all down, it looked terrific!
I love my new hairdresser. He’s funny, and handsome. And he’s kind enough to put up with a picky one-armed woman who is sometimes really bossy in the hairdressing chair.
Let’s give a shout-out to Mr. Richard.

Where are we going? I don't know. He only promises that it is fun!

Let's take a pic! Okay, take five. I'm laughing because I keep leaving Richard out of the pic.
