when things change
Lately life has been shift shaping, like those creatures in the movies I never watch. My mom has been sick, and suddenly I see a different season. Shift shaping. My strong, beautiful mom needing care, assurance, hope that things will get better. I want her to get well. I pray. I talk on the phone. I visit, and the time we spend together holds more weight than ever before.
Richard and I are in a new season. Grandparents. The best shift-shaping variety. I love holding Elle, receiving her kisses, watching my daughter parent her child.
We are on the verge of new things in both my ministry and Richard’s career as a counselor. Knowing that God is leading, but not sure where he’s taking us exactly. Shift shaping of the faith kind.
I sometimes wonder when life settles. Is there a time that you suddenly know exactly what tomorrow holds? Are you settled into a routine, a common way of doing things. . .and is that something I would ever embrace? Probably not.
So, the one thing that doesn’t shift is God’s unfailing presence and love. It’s my anchor in this shift-shaping season.

a break from the cyberworld
I was quiet last week, but I needed that quiet. To fully enjoy the people I love. To enjoy this spring season that’s emerging. Have you noticed the blooms? The green pushing up from the soil?
As much as I love ministry and blogging and tweeting and speaking and writing, I don’t want to miss out on the beauty around me.
So I took a break from the cyberworld and let God pour back in.
Tomorrow I’ll jump back into the Bible study, finishing up Pushing Past Your Past and moving forward to a new study.
I can’t wait to see you there.

Yesterday I sat in my home church service. I listened as a man read from a missionary newsletter. It read something like this:
7 people saved. 10 people healed. 1 person no longer broken emotionally. 1 man released from hospital. 10 people who must lose everything to become Christians encouraged in their faith. 1 family made whole again.
The numbers just kept piling up.
The one thing that struck me….hard, was that the missionary didn’t say one word about himself or his ministry. He just recounted the “fruit” of what was taking place.
I placed my forehead on the pew in front of me and listened to the sweet whisper of my Heavenly Father: “Suz, this is what really matters.” (more…)

Be you
“Be you,” Liz Curtis Higgs said.
Great advice from a woman who has published numerous bestsellers, who has spoken over 1600 times, who has traveled the globe to share her story of the “bad girls of the Bible” who found life in Jesus.
I laughed a lot. But at the end of her speech, I took away one thing: be you.
I will never be as funny as Liz. But I’m not Liz, so it would be a false impersonation at best, if I tried. (more…)
